Dental implants – What are they?

A dental implant is a titanium replacement for a root of a tooth that is surgically implanted in the jawbone. When Dr. Kesteven inserts the implant device into the jaw, a chemical and mechanical bond is formed. The jawbone actually grows into the implant.

Most dental implants placed today are endosteal root form fixtures (similar to a man-made tooth root).

As the body heals for approximately two to six months after the surgery, the bone around the implant fuses to the implant through a process called osseointegration. After the healing phase is complete, the implants are now ready to have the crown, bridges, or dentures placed.

What happens if I want Dental Implants?

At Kesteven Dental Care Studio, we begin with a thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical and dental history, and a full clinical examination of the entire mouth and missing tooth area. This exam may require Xrays to view the mouth in all dimensions.

After assessing the patient, a comprehensive treatment plan will be prepared. From that point, implants are surgically placed in the jawbone under local anaesthesia and conscious sedation, if requested.

The length of the healing time is based on the quality and quantity of bone and the type of implant placed. After adequate healing, the implant can be used to support a crown, bridge, or denture.

Are there different types of dental implants?

Yes. A variety of sizes, shapes and configurations are available. This variety of implants is necessary because of the wide range of structural differences such as the amount and quality of bone, and the shape and relationship of the upper and lower jaws. Dr. Kesteven will prescribe the appropriate implant for you.

Can implants be used in conjunction with my dentures?

Absolutely!

Implants have been an amazing help to denture wearers. Implants can help stabilise dentures by converting them into “overdentures”, making them solid, secure, and functional. This solution works for those who are not candidates for full mouth implant restoration or seek a more cost-effective alternative. The need for denture creams and powders is eliminated. Dentures simply snap into place.
